Route 66: Megan Khang’s consistent play has her pointed toward victory at LPGA Portland Classic

Looking for her second win in two weeks, Megan Khang soared to the top of the leaderboard Saturday after three rounds at the LPGA Portland Classic at Columbia Edgewater Country Club.

Khang, a 25-year-old from Massachusetts who earned her first tour win last week at the CPKC Women’s Open in Vancouver, B.C., made five birdies on the back nine — including one on the 18th hole — to card her third consecutive 66 and lead by one stroke at 18 under par.

“I’m just going to try to take what I learned last week into this week with a one-shot lead,” said Khang, who won in a playoff over Jin Young Ko in Vancouver. “It’s definitely close and there are a ton of people I know for a fact can shoot low, so it’s going to be anyone’s game out there.”

After a rainy Thursday and a cloudy Friday left the course soft, sunny weather with temperatures in the mid-80s firmed up the course. But scores stayed low, with 32 of the 68 players who made the cut shooting in the 60s.

There are 13 players within five shots of the lead, including reigning KPMG Women’s PGA Championship winner Ruoning Yin, who’s three shots back after posting a 68 playing with Khang on Saturday.
